About 256 Grays

Since 1999, 256 Grays has designed interiors and produced the visualisations that bring them to life. The studio is based in Mumbai and operates today as 256 GRAYS Studio LLP, with work spanning private residences, hospitality projects, and commissions for architects, developers and design houses across twenty-two cities. Our practice is direct: small teams, a senior hand on every project, and the same care for the image of a room as for the room itself.

Interior architecture

We design interiors made to be lived with, not photographed once and put away. Materials are chosen for how they age, and plans are drawn around how people move through a room rather than around what reads in elevation. The intent is space that holds up to daily use and still rewards a slow second look.

3D visualisation

A visualisation should communicate intent before construction begins and protect it through every revision that follows. We build images that read as photographs: correct light, honest materials, and figures who belong in the frame. The work on this page was produced for a private residence by Gauri Khan Designs in Goa.

Clients

Our clients come back. Some have worked with 256 Grays across multiple buildings and several years; others arrive through quiet referral. The clients page lists developers, hospitality groups, named architects, and private houses both in India and abroad.

Partnerships

Two longer-running collaborations have shaped the studio: an ongoing CGI partnership with Enviz in Australia, and a closed multi-year engagement with Modsy in the United States, now part of Lennar Corporation. Both are documented on our partnerships page.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What file formats do you accept as input?

AutoCAD (.dwg, .dxf), Revit (.rvt), SketchUp (.skp), Rhino (.3dm), 3ds Max (.max), Blender (.blend), plus PDF and JPEG references and hand drawings. We handle conversion on our end if needed.

What's a typical project timeline?

A single high-end still render takes 7 to 14 days from approved 3D model. Project sets of 4 to 8 images run 3 to 4 weeks. Cinematic walkthroughs run 4 to 8 weeks depending on length and complexity. Rush timelines are possible. We quote them honestly.

How does the revision process work?

Every project includes three review rounds before final delivery: the clay render (geometry, composition, camera), the first draft (lighting, materials, atmosphere), and the second draft (final corrections and polish). After the second draft sign-off, the final high-resolution render is produced. Major scope changes after sign-off are quoted separately. We do not offer unlimited revisions. They dilute quality and timelines.

What do the final deliverables look like?

Still renders ship as print-resolution TIFF or JPEG at 4K minimum (3840 × 2160), with 8K available on request. Animations ship as 4K MP4 (H.264). All files are colour-managed and ready for marketing, print, or web. We retain working files for one year.

Do you sign NDAs?

Yes, for residential HNI projects, unreleased commercial developments, and any client who requires one. Standard practice is full confidentiality on all unreleased work until the client publicly launches it.

Who owns the final visuals?

Clients receive full usage rights for marketing, presentation, sales, and publication. We retain the right to feature work in our portfolio after public release, unless the NDA states otherwise.

Do you work with international clients?

Yes, a significant portion of our work is for clients in the Middle East, USA, Europe, and Southeast Asia. Communication runs over email, scheduled video calls, and shared review platforms. Time-zone handoffs typically accelerate delivery.

Do you produce VR or immersive walkthroughs?

Yes, 360° panoramic renders for VR viewing and cinematic pre-rendered animations. The right format depends on use: sales presentations, on-site client previews, or publication.
